caine mutiny
The Caine Mutiny is a 1951 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Herman Wouk. The novel grew out of Wouk's personal experiences aboard a destroyer-minesweeper in the Pacific in World War II and deals with, among other things, the moral and ethical decisions made at sea as interpreted by the code of the US Navy. The story also draws heavily on the 1789 mutiny against Captain William Bligh, commander of the HMS Bounty.

black liberation theology
Question: "What is Liberation Theology?"
Answer: Simply put, Liberation Theology is an attempt to interpret Scripture through the plight of the poor. It is largely a humanistic doctrine. It started in South America in the turbulent 1950's when Marxism was making great gains among the poor because of its emphasis on the redistribution of wealth, allowing poor peasants to share in the wealth of the colonial elite and thus upgrade their economic status in life. As a theology, it has very strong Roman Catholic roots.

american idol stripper
Wow, I love his interview, especially after the news of his previous career got out. He sits there speaking to the camera about being embarrassed about people seeing his package in a leotard back when he did gymnastics.
Well, this not so shy American Idol contestant was a stripper for three years up until September 30, 2007, according to his ex-manager, Gordy Bryan. Evidently he was a male stripper in a Phoenix night club where the majority of his clientèle was male. Apparently Hernandez fit in rather well according to Bryan, “He had the look and the type that people like, so he made pretty good money here.”
Those in fear of not seeing Mr. Helicopter Hernandez again after this news leaked, don’t worry, he will be back on Tuesday as planned.
Now, think back to previous American Idol scandals, “In 2003, finalist Frenchie Davis was dismissed because of her appearance on an adult Web site; but last year, Antonella Barba remained in the competition after racy photos of her surfaced on the Internet.” What on Earth is the difference between these three cases? No clue, American Idol is pretty random on this subject. But then again it is up to the public to see how far these contestants go after they pass the AI test. Will the public vote more or less for Hernandez after they learned he did the helicopter on stage?

building collapse
A building collapse at 124th Street and Park Avenue has prompted the MTA to shut down all train service in and out of Grand Central Terminal. Metro-North's Dan Brucker told WCBS 880, "We don't know how long the closure will last. We have been told by the police not to have any trains run through the 125th Street station."
That's probably because the authorities are concerned that vibrations from the trains will affect the building. The building at 102 East 124th Street partially collapsed a little after noon, and then later the entire building collapsed. The building next to it, 100 East 124th, is in danger of collapsing and will be demolished immediately. It's believed the buildings, which are owned by Kushner Companies, are vacant - no injuries are reported.
All trains are being held at stations above 125th Street. About 80-90,000 people using Metro-North during rush hour, which means that when (if) service resumes, there will be some crazy delays. Additionally, WABC 7 reports, "some equipment will be out of position because it is now stuck outside of Grand Central Terminal."
And it looks like the MTA website is currently down back up: "Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Line train service has been temporarily suspended into and out of Grand Central Terminal because of a building collapse in the vicinity of 124 Street and Park Avenue." And from the NYC Transit alert, "Also, due to a building collapse in the vicinity of 124th Street and Park Avenue affecting Metro-North Railroad Service in and out of Grand Central Station, New York City Transit is cross-honoring Metro-North Railroad ticket holders at the Marble Hill-225th Street Station, Wakefield-241st Street Station, 233rd Street Station and the Grand Central-42nd Street Station."
2008_03_mnmobscene.jpgExpect a mob scene at Grand Central. In fact, we're getting reports that there are crowd control issues at Grand Central. And streets around the collapse have been closed, as the Buildings Department and emergency services are on location.
Update 4:45PM Some commenters had good suggestions for trying to get out of the city, but WCBS 880 reports bussing may be a dream: "Brucker says no way to bus people around there, wouldn't make a dent in that crowd. One bus holds 50 customer, while one train holds 1,200 customers."
Update 5:07PM Service is restored to train service in and out of Grand Central, but expect extensive delays (estimates are 90 minutes, could be more).

Being the victim of a bully at school is often dismissed as just a part of growing up, but many say it can leave lasting emotional scars. A survivor of peer abuse offers advice for parents, teachers and children on coping with and putting an end to the abusive practice.
david hernandez
He is soooooo the Antonella of season 7 ... but way better. American Idol contestant David Hernandez, who's slated to perform with the rest of the Top 8 Guys tonight, reportedly used to shed his typically very well-matched clothes at Dick's Cabaret, a "mostly male" strip club in Phoenix.
The news is fairly easy to believe. As Michael Slezak, who is kind of into Idol, just noted via e-mail, "He does move really well up there on the stage." Actually, I remember thinking during his Top 12 Guys performance of "The Midnight Hour" that he wasn't moving enough, and had instead decided to plant his feet in place as if setting some kind of three-minute pick. (Basketball reference on PopWatch!) It was almost as if he was on someone's lap! Now I understand.
Former strippers are on a serious roll in Hollywood, so I say let's give this one a chance, if only for the hot moves David could whip out until Idol gives him the boot. What do you think?
UPDATE: According to the Associated Press, Hernandez will remain on the show despite his past. He'll perform tonight as planned. (Of course, it's been taped already!)

airborne
Are you using Airborne to cure or prevent common cold and for “other therapeutic benefits”? Well, if that’s the case, you’ll be interested in the result of the Airborne Lawsuit. It results in a $23 million settlement today.
Airborne had a class action lawsuit because of false allegations they made about the product. Why? There’s little solid proof that the product works! So what they are selling? A placebo, Airborne doesn’t have the scientific backup needed.
The company is going to recall the product, and the money is supposedly destined to all airborne consumers who spent cash in this garbage med.

metro north
Service on all three main lines of the Metro-North Railroad — the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines — was suspended at 3:15 p.m. after a vacant five-story building collapsed at 124th Street and Park Avenue, one block from the 125th Street station in Harlem, where all three lines stop on their way to and from Grand Central Terminal.
Service was restored starting at 4:45 p.m., starting with a 3:50 p.m. Hudson Line train bound for Croton-Harmon, which left Grand Central about an hour after its scheduled departure. By then, an untold number of trains and passengers had been inconvenienced, with many passengers told to find alternative means of travel.
There were no reports of any injuries. At 11:54 a.m., a caller reported that the facade on the east side of the building, at 102 East 124th Street, had deteriorated and partly collapsed into an adjacent lot. After city workers responded to the scene, the rest of the building fell, officials said. The stability of an adjacent vacant building, at 100 East 124th Street, has been compromised, and the building will be demolished imminently as a precaution, officials said.
According to property records, both properties are owned by Kushner Companies, a property management firm based in Manhattan and Florham Park, N.J. Jared C. Kushner, a principal of the firm, is the owner and publisher of The New York Observer. The records indicate that the properties were sold together for $5.2 million in 2006. City tax records describe 102 East 124th Street as a five-story, 19-unit building and 100 East 24th Street as a five-story, 25-unit building. Both were built in 1910. The Buildings Department’s online database states that a stop-work order was issued for the site on Jan. 8.
Howard J. Rubenstein, a spokesman for Jared Kushner, said the company had planned to demolish the buildings and intended to go through with the work starting at 7 p.m. this evening.
“The buildings had been vacant for about six months, and the company had initially intended to rehabilitate the buildings,” Mr. Rubenstein said. “Two days ago, bricks started to fall from the building. Kushner sent engineers down, and they determined that both buildings were not stable, were not safe. And they contacted the Department of Buildings seeking permission to demolish both buildings, starting tomorrow. The Department of Buildings and the Fire Department sent people to the scene immediately, and while they were there, the building collapsed.”
Mr. Rubenstein quoted Mr. Kushner as saying: “Thank goodness no one was hurt. It’s quite unfortunate that this tremendous inconvenience was caused.”
The Police and Fire Departments directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to suspend service, out of concern that the vibrations of the moving trains could lead to further damage, M.T.A. officials said.
Consolidated Edison has cut power to the site and the Department of Environmental Protection has cut water to the site.
Northbound traffic on the east side of Park Avenue from 123rd to 125th Streets has been suspended, as has traffic on East 124th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
“They don’t want rumbling to weaken the parts of the building that are still standing,” said Marjorie S. Anders, a Metro-North spokeswoman. “So far we don’t have any debris on the tracks but I’ve been told if the building collapses further, we might.”
Passengers on what was to have been the 3:10 p.m. Hudson Line train reportedly heard announcements directing them to leave the train and find alternative means of travel.
At Grand Central Terminal, a loud groan arose from the main hall after an announcement on the intercom system at 4:10 p.m. said that service was suspended. Hundreds of people milled around in the main hall, many of them talking on their cellphones. A giant message board stated, “Attention customers, due to Fire Department activity, Metro-North service has been temporarily discontinued.”
Sarah English, 29, who works in financial services in Westchester County, was on a business trip in Manhattan today and arrived at Grand Central at 3:30 p.m. to catch a train back home to Chappaqua.
“First they said service was temporarily discontinued, and then they said about 10 minutes later that service was going to resume on a limited basis,” she recalled around 4:30 p.m. “And then they said, after about another 10 minutes, that full service would be restored. And then about 10 minutes ago, they said there was no service at all.” She was talking with friends about whether to rent a car, take a bus or find another source of transportation.

airborne lawsuit
Are you using Airborne to cure or prevent common cold and for “other therapeutic benefits”? Well, if that’s the case, you’ll be interested in the result of the Airborne Lawsuit. It results in a $23 million settlement today.
Airborne had a class action lawsuit because of false allegations they made about the product. Why? There’s little solid proof that the product works! So what they are selling? A placebo, Airborne doesn’t have the scientific backup needed.
The company is going to recall the product, and the money is supposedly destined to all airborne consumers who spent cash in this garbage med.
airborne-lawsuit.jpg
“There’s no credible evidence that what’s in Airborne can prevent colds or protect you from a germy environment,” said CSPI Senior nutritionist, David Schardt. “Airborne is basically on overpriced, run-of-the-mill vitamin pill that’s been cleverly, but deceptively, marketed.”
Many people are enraged over this, in the end they just bough a bunch of vitamins. And well the company hasn’t much to say about this, a recorded message at Airborne says “Defendants deny any wrongdoing or illegal conduct, but have agreed to settle the litigation.”. At the end $23 million is nothing compared to the big earnings they have. Anyway, that’s a victory to consumers and a reminder that placebo can work pretty good on some people.
Have you bought Airborne? You can ask for refunds by writing to Airborne Class Action Settlement Administrator at PO Box 1897, Faribault, MN 55021-7152 or visit

favre retires
Brett Favre listed stress as the reason for his retirement today, and he said the more the Packers won, the more stress he felt.
You can listen to his explanation, via a voicemail to Chris Mortensen of ESPN. Favre seemed emotional, and his rationale leaves a little doubt about whether there still may be a chance he can be persuaded to return. He said the only outcome that would justify a comeback would be to win the Super Bowl, and he said he wasn’t up to that kind of pressure.
He may not want to leave that impression as his final one — that the quintessial competitor can’t face up to that kind of challenge. He’ll have another shot to explain: The Packers have announced a news conference for 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
At The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that feeling of doubt was voiced by Favre’s agent, who said the Packers didn’t make a big effort to make him feel wanted.
Excerpt:
His agent, James (Bus) Cook, told me a few minutes ago that he believes Favre wants to play another year and didn’t get the sense that the Packers wanted him back all that badly.
“That’s just my opinion,” Cook said of the Packers’ lack of interest. “I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don’t think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don’t know that anyone tried to talk him out of it.”
Cook said that Favre feels physically and mentally capable of playing at least one more year.
“I think he wanted to play,” Cook said. ” I think he’s still got it. He knows he’s still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don’t know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That’s just the feeling I got.”
Cook was asked whether he thought Favre could be talked into returning: “I don’t know,” he said.
Reactions from around the blogosphere:
At Packer Palace, a comparison to a funeral
Excerpt:
Well the day we all dreaded but knew was coming is here but strangely I don’t feel suicidal or really even sad. It’s kind of like going to the funeral of a grandparent that 98 years old had a great life traveled around the world and done every thing they ever dreamed of. Those funerals are usually more of a celebration life than a sadness of loss.
Looking ahead to a Favre-less future, Michael David Smith at AOL Fanhouse assessed Green Bay’s prospects with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
Excerpt:
Not great, but not terrible either, according to the new Super Bowl odds posted today by Bodog. The Packers were listed at 14/1 before the Favre retirement announcement and are now listed at 20/1. I would have thought Favre’s retirement would drop the Packers down a bit further than that.

cutty sark ship
The Cutty Sark Trust is thrilled with the decision by Heritage Lottery Fund to increase their grant to Cutty Sark by £10 million. Richard Hamilton, Chairman of the Cutty Sark Trust, said:
"The Heritage Lottery Fund has been an incredible partner of the Cutty Sark Trust and we are deeply grateful for this extra support. The support from the public and our other partners has also been enormously encouraging.
"The Trust has secured £30 million against the projected cost of £35 million to realise this exciting and innovative project at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site."

Progress update on the conservation project
At the time of the fire, the ship’s masts, gear, deckhouses and saloon, along with about half of the original main deck and 200 of her hull planks had been removed for conservation or storage. Of the planks that remained on the ship during the fire, only a relatively small number were badly fire damaged. But none was so badly damaged that it has not been possible to remove the charring so that it can be rehung on the ship. We also know now as the result of surveys that the ship’s frames have not been distorted significantly. There has been some distortion of the diagonal ties under the decks, but we are confident that these can be left if not too visually intrusive or straightened if necessary to lay the new decks.
Overall, less than 2% of the fabric from her working life as a sailing ship has been lost. We have been remarkably lucky – Cutty Sark is still here.
Now, for the first time since she was built, the ship’s iron frame is currently fully exposed. Of the 500 planks on the hull, 400 have been removed for conservation, leaving less than eight feet of planking runs at the bottom of the hull.
The fire has not affected the strength of the metalwork and therefore it has not compromised the overall plans for the re-presentation of the ship.
A third of the ship has now been cleaned with a wet abrasive process and this has exposed details such as foundry marks which have not been seen since 1869.
The whole of the bowsprit has been disassembled and removed for conservation. The rudder has been removed and the poop has been raised to expose the metal work underneath.
We still do not know what caused the fire. We are waiting for the police report to be issued. The ship is still technically a crime scene.
About the Cutty Sark Trust
The Cutty Sark Trust is an independent charity which owns and runs the sole surviving tea clipper, Cutty Sark. The ship is the iconic gateway to Maritime Greenwich, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. For over 50 years Cutty Sark has been the flagship of the area which now attracts over six million visitors each year. The Trust’s mission is to ensure that Cutty Sark is preserved for this and future generations to enjoy and that she continues to be a rich cultural resource for all.
The Cutty Sark Trust’s six priorities for the conservation programme are:
1. To ensure that no major conservation work will be required for the next 50 years
2. To ensure that the ship continues to be sustainable, building reserves for future maintenance
3. To broaden access to the ship
4. To maximise learning opportunities
5. To reinterpret the ship for the 21st century
6. To develop a skilled workforce
Prior to the grant uplift, HLF had awarded five grants totalling £13.45million to the Cutty Sark Trust including a £11.75million grant in September 2006 towards the current conservation project.

Cutty Sark Factsheet
Cutty Sark’s name derives from the famous poem, "Tam O’ Shanter" by Robert Burns about a man’s admiration for a scantily-clad witch called Nannie. Nannie was dressed in a short night dress known as a 'cutty sark', an archaic Scottish name for this garment.
The ship was launched on 22 November 1869 from Scott and Linton's shipyard at Dumbarton, on the Clyde. She was built at a cost of £16,150 for John "White Hat" (so named after his favourite headwear) Willis. John (or Jock) Willis wanted a ship that could challenge the best clippers on the China tea run.
She weighs 963 tons and her main mast is 47 m high. Her length overall is 85.4 m (280ft). She has 11 miles of rigging and carried 34 sails, with a total area of 32,000 sq. ft. (2,976 sq. m) giving her a top speed of over 17 knots.
Scott & Linton, founded in 1868, had never built a ship of this size before and were keen to accommodate their client's every demand. However, they went bankrupt before the job was complete, citing poor cash flow and pressure from their landlords, Dennys of Dumbarton, who finished the job.
She was built for the China tea trade, but the opening of the Suez Canal and the introduction of quick and economic steam travel, meant that she carried her last cargo of tea in 1877. Her fastest voyage to London carrying tea was 107 days in 1871.
The ship's heyday was in the Australian wool trade, from 1883 to 1895. Under the command of Captain Richard Woodget she was the fastest ship on the run, her best time being 72 days from Sydney to London in 1885 via Cape Horn.
In 1895, as Cutty Sark was no longer making as much money as she once did, John Willis sold the ship to the Ferreira shipping company of Portugal. Renamed the Ferreira, she spent the next 27 years (including surviving the First World War) taking different cargoes to destinations in Africa, the Americas and Europe, visiting every major port in the world. However, she was dismasted in a storm in 1916, and had to be re-rigged as a barquentine.
In 1922 she was bought and restored by Captain and Mrs Dowman and became the first historic vessel since Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hinde to be open to the public. She was moored in Falmouth, Cornwall and maintained at the personal expense of the Dowmans, who also used her as a cadet training establishment.
In 1938, after Captain Dowman’s death, Cutty Sark was transferred to the Thames Nautical Training College at Greenhithe and was used as an auxiliary training ship to HMS Worcester.
After being displayed for the 1951 Festival of Britain, Cutty Sark was brought to Greenwich by the Cutty Sark Preservation Society. A special dry-dock was constructed for her, and the ship was floated in, in December 1954.
Over two and a half years were spent on the ship’s restoration, and in 1957 the ship was opened to the public (in a live BBC broadcast) by HM The Queen. Since that time, Cutty Sark has been visited by over 16 million people from all over the world.
"The Heritage Lottery Fund has been an incredible partner of the Cutty Sark Trust and we are deeply grateful for this extra support. The support from the public and our other partners has also been enormously encouraging.

Blogging the National Football League, Blogging the NFL
After years of speculation and almost constant questioning on when he would retire, Green Bay Packers legendary three-time MVP quarterback Brett Favre finally announced today that he would hang up his cleats after 17 seasons in the National Football League. It’s a dark day for not only Green Bay Packers fans, but football fans in general.
As someone who certainly appreciated and admired Brett’s game over the years, I am saddened it’s over because an NFL season without Brett Favre will be hard to adjust to. This past season alone it seemed that every time he stepped on the field, another NFL record was in danger of falling (he currently owns six of them). Growing up, before I started writing about football for money, I didn’t like Brett or the Packers. It’s just the way it had to be. I was a Minnesota fan and watching him beat my beloved Vikings over and over again, oftentimes on the last drive of a game, was infuriating. But the older I got, the more I could appreciate just what an incredible football player he was. He grew to become one of my favorite players of all-time.
Brett amassed some incredible numbers during his extraordinary career — 257 games; 61,655 yards passing; 442 touchdown passes. Perhaps most impressive of all his accomplishments was his streak of consecutive regular-season starts — which will end now at 253 games. If you add the playoffs, it goes up to 275 games. Really, his accomplishments are staggering. In a phone message to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen today, Brett simply said:
“I know I can still play, but it’s like I told my wife, I’m just tired mentally. I’m just tired.”
Somehow, I feel that Brett was holding out to see if Randy Moss would be available in this season of free agency. Brett wanted Randy as a teammate last year and spoke out in frustration when the Packers didn’t make a better play for arguably the game’s best wide receiver. With Randy’s 2008 contract status still in-question until yesterday, I believe Brett was watching closely. I think he would’ve returned for an 18th NFL season with Randy Moss as a teammate. It would’ve given him the spark he needed for one more shot at the Super Bowl. That being said, Brett leaves behind a very young and talented Green Bay squad capable of a world championship with or without Randy Moss. With or without Brett Favre is another matter altogether.
Obviously, Brett is still capable, physically, of playing quarterback in the NFL. At 38-years-old, he’s coming off one of the best seasons of his career. He can do the job. But if he doesn’t have it together mentally as he claims, it isn’t going to work. That’s what gives a player the desire and determination they need because getting through an NFL season is as much mental as it is physical.
I had the opportunity to talk with Brett three times on national conference calls over the years and to this day, he is still my favorite interview. In fact, you can check out my latest Q&A with him here. He was always courteous and respectful and gave the best and most complete answers of anyone I’ve ever interviewed.
Of course, in the midst of all this, nobody could be happier than backup QB Aaron Rodgers who was drafted three years ago to eventually become Brett’s replacement. And let me clarify, he’s happy in the sense that it’s finally his turn. The only real look we’ve had at Aaron was his outstanding play in a backup role against the Dallas Cowboys this past season when Brett was out with a wrist injury. Aaron was an impressive 18 of 26 for 201 yards and a touchdown. But we don’t have any idea what the future holds at the quarterback position for the Green Bay Packers. With Brett Favre, you knew exactly what you were getting year-in and year-out. I don’t envy Aaron’s situation. I mean, he can’t replace Brett Favre. Just like Jake Plummer couldn’t or Jay Cutler can’t replace John Elway. Fans will need to let these Hall of Famers go and support the next man up.
I’ll miss watching one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. And while I’ll miss talking with Brett as a player, I can look forward to speaking with him again when he enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If there were ever a sure-thing, first-ballot selection into the HOF, it’s Brett Favre. I hate to see him go. I’m already missing #4.
He grew to become one of my favorite players of all-time.

brett favre retires
I would have thought Favre’s retirement would drop the Packers down a bit further than that.

gary gygax
The rattling of dice across tabletops around the word falls silent today with the news that co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons and TSR, Gary Gygax, has passed away at the age of 69. The news came via the forums of Troll Lord Games, who publish Gygax's Lejendary Adventures and Castles & Crusades sourcebooks, delivered via his son Ernie Gygax. He died in his home, having been in failing health for some time, suffering several strokes and a near heart-attack. Gygax was an inspiration to the gaming industry, with his work directly or indirectly influencing entire genres - role-playing games and MMORPGs specifically. I probably wouldn't be writing this right now if the thought of missing my weekly D&D games hadn't kept me from allocating my 6'6" frame towards more sporting endeavors. Gary Gygax may have passed on, but the legacy he leaves to gaming will live on forever. Rest in peace, Dungeon Master.

jeff buckley hallelujah
A cover of a cover of a live version, sure, but Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" owns. To borrow Sasha Frere-Jones' terminology, Buckley's take isn't just "killingly good"; for an entire generation of TV- and film-watching downloaders, the siren-voiced troubadour steals "Hallelujah" from both its original composer, Leonard Cohen (see: Brian Howe's Cohen reissues review), and John Cale, the man whose Shrek-appearing cover most clearly influenced this prayerful, bell-like take. If there are young men in coffeehouses everywhere attempting fluttery voices and quietly dizzying electric guitar accompaniment, this song-- part of a Buckley best-of out May 22-- is to blame. Even so, it owns.
At the recent EMP Pop Conference, Michael Barthel tirelessly analyzed the song's journey from Cohen's overproduced, gospel-backed 1985 curio to the overwhelmingly melancholy 1994 hymn familiar to millions from "The O.C.", "Scrubs", and, ugh, that new Fall Out Boy album. It may be nearly impossible now to separate Buckley's version from its sociocultural baggage, and clearly he simplifies some of the artistic nuances of Cohen's less remarkable original, buying into bathos and the romantic artiste myth. Still, there's something about the song, and indeed Buckley's recording-- cold breath, melodic guitar work, that voice-- which causes it to transcend both performer and composer to become part of a broader pop consciousness. Such is its power that my fiancée and I still fall asleep to it some nights, years after discovering it, but we know we don't "own" it anymore; no one does.

don t you forget about me
Michael Lee Johns sings Simple Mind’s “Don’t Forget About Me.”
I like the song — it reminds of my teenage years and all of the John Hughes films set in the Chicago suburbs that were popular in the 1980s.
Randy: It’s so you. You kind of remind me of Michael Hutchence.
Paula: I’m so glad you’re the kind of artist you is defining who you are. She likes his low range. You have this presence that is different and unique. “This season you are all unique and different.”
Simon: I liked it, but didn’t love it. You’re rather like one of the girls in the competition. You haven’t picked the right song yet. “I really, really like you. You’re going to do well in this competition.”

woodrow keeble
Woodrow Wilson Keeble is the first Sioux Indian to receive the Medal of Honor. The President presented it to his family in a ceremony today in the White House.
It's taken nearly 60 years for Master Sergeant Woodrow Wilson Keeble to be awarded the medal he earned on the battlefield in Korea. His nominating paperwork was lost, and then it was resubmitted, and then it was lost again. Then the deadline passed, and Woody and his family were told it was too late. Some blamed the bureaucracy for a shameful blunder. Others suspected racism: Woody was a full-blooded Sioux Indian. Whatever the reason, the first Sioux to ever receive the Medal of Honor died without knowing it was his. A terrible injustice was done to a good man, to his family, and to history.
This is a long story, but one that bring pride to your hearts and possibly tears to your eyes. What a true American hero!! Woody should a focus in every child's history class. Here's is a transcript of the ceremony:
It's easy to understand why so many people argued so passionately for the Medal once you hear the story of what Woody Keeble did. This story unfolded at an important time in our history. The year was 1951. The world was divided by a Cold War. America was under threat and — some believed — overmatched and out of heart. The great evil of communism was said to be the future of the world. It was on the advance in Europe, and in China, and on the Asian peninsula of Korea.
On that peninsula, a battle raged between communist forces in the North and the forces of freedom in the South. And Woody Keeble, a decorated veteran of Guadalcanal, raised his hand to serve his country once again. Woody said he volunteered for Korea because, "somebody has to teach those kids how to fight." And that's exactly what he did. In George Company, he quickly became a mentor, a teacher, and a legend. He was so strong that he could lift the back of a jeep and spin it around.
Some people knew he had been scouted by the Chicago White Sox. He had a heck of an arm, and he threw grenades like a baseball. One soldier remembered the time Woody walked through a mine field, leaving tracks for his men to follow. Another recalled the time Woody was shot twice in the arm and he kept fighting, without seeming to notice.
That fall, Woody's courage was on full display during a major offensive called Operation No Man [sic]. His company was ordered to take a series of hills protecting a major enemy supply line. High up in those hills and manning machine guns were Chinese communist forces. After days of fighting, the officers in Woody's company had fallen. Woody assumed command of one platoon, then a second, and then a third, until one of the hills was taken, and the enemy fled in wild retreat.
That first advance nearly killed him. By the end of the day, Woody had more than 83 grenade fragments in his body. He had bleeding wounds in his arms, chest, and thighs. And yet he still wanted to fight. So after a day with the medics, he defied the doctor's orders and returned to the battlefield. And that is where, on October 20, 1951, Master Sergeant Woodrow Wilson Keeble made history.
Communist forces still held a crucial hill that was the "pearl" of their defenses. They had pinned down U.S. forces with a furious assault. One soldier said the enemy lobbed so many grenades on American troops that they looked like a flock of blackbirds in the sky. Allied forces had tried heavy artillery to dislodge the enemy, and nothing seemed to be working. The offensive was failing, and American boys were dying. But our forces had one advantage: Woody was back, and Woody was some kind of mad.
He grabbed grenades and his weapon and climbed that crucial hill alone. Woody climbed hundreds of yards through dirt and rock, with his wounds aching, bullets flying, and grenades falling all around him. As Woody first started off, someone saw him and remarked: "Either he's the bravest soldier I have ever met, or he's crazy." Soldiers watched in awe as Woody single-handedly took out one machine gun nest, and then another. When Woody was through, all 16 enemy soldiers were dead, the hill was taken, and the Allies won the day.
Woody Keeble's act of heroism saved many American lives, and earned him a permanent place in his fellow soldiers' hearts. Years later, some of those tough soldiers' eyes would fill with tears when they saw Woody again. One said: "He was the most respected person I ever knew in my life." Another said: "I would have followed him anywhere." A third said: "He was awesome." Those brave boys battled tyranny, held the line against a communist menace, and kept a nation free. And some of them are with us today. We are honored to host you at the White House. We thank you for your courage. We thank you for honoring your comrade in arms. And we thank you for your service to the United States.
As the war ended, Woody went back to North Dakota. In some ways, his return was a sad one. Within a few years, his first wife died. He would suffer from numerous affects of the war. A series of strokes paralyzed his right side and robbed him of his ability to speak. And the wounds he sustained in service to his country would haunt him for the rest of his life.
Yet Woody was not a bitter man. As a member of his family put it: "Woody loved his country, loved his tribe, and loved God." Woody even found love again with a woman named Blossom. Woody may not have been able to speak, but he could still get a message across. He wrote a note asking Blossom to marry him. She told him she needed some time to think about it. So while she was deliberating, Woody put their engagement announcement in the newspaper. (Laughter.) This is a man who was relentless in love as well as war. (Laughter.)
In his community he was an everyday hero. Even in poor health, he would mow lawns for seniors in the summers and help cars out of the snow banks in the winters. He once picked up a hitchhiker who was down on his luck and looking for work. Woody wasn't a rich man, but he gave the man $50. Those who knew Woody can tell countless stories like this — one of a great soldier who became a Good Samaritan.
To his last days, he was a devoted veteran. He proudly wore his uniform at local events and parades. Sometimes folks who loved him would see that uniform and ask him about his missing medal. They felt he was cheated, yet Woddy never complained. See, he believed America was the greatest nation on Earth, even when it made mistakes. And there was never a single day he wasn't proud to have served our country.
Woody suffered his eighth — and final — stroke in 1982. His son, Russell, took him to the hospital and prayed it wasn't the end. But Woody knew, and he wasn't afraid. Woodrow Wilson Keeble died in graceful anonymity, unknown except to the fortunate souls who loved him, and those who learned from him. Russell put it this way: "Woody met death with a smile. He taught me how to live, and he taught me how to die."
I am pleased that this good and honorable man is finally getting the recognition he deserves. But on behalf of our grateful nation, I deeply regret that this tribute comes decades too late. Woody will never hold this Medal in his hands or wear it on his uniform. He will never hear a President thank him for his heroism. He will never stand here to see the pride of his friends and loved ones, as I see in their eyes now.
But there are some things we can still do for him. We can tell his story. We can honor his memory. And we can follow his lead — by showing all those who have followed him on the battlefield the same love and generosity of spirit that Woody showed his country everyday.
At the request of the Keeble family and in accordance with the Sioux tradition, two empty chairs have been placed on this stage to represent Woody and Blossom and to acknowledge their passing into the spiritual world. The Sioux have a saying: "The life of a man is a circle." Well, today, we complete Woody Keeble's circle — from an example to his men to an example for the ages. And if we honor his life and take lessons from his good and noble service, then Master Sergeant Woody Keeble will serve his country once again.
I want to thank you all for coming. May I ask for God's blessings on you and Woody Keeble and the Keeble family. May God continue to bless our country. And now I ask Mr. Hawkins and Mr. Bluedog to join me. Commander Thompson will read the citation.
COMMANDER THOMPSON: The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor to Master Sergeant Woodrow W. Keeble, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty:
In action with an armed enemy near Sangsan-ni, Korea, on 20 October, 1951. On that day, Master Sergeant Keeble was an acting platoon leader for the support platoon in Company G, 19th Infantry, in the attack on Hill 765, a steep and rugged position that was well defended by the enemy. Leading the support platoon, Master Sergeant Keeble saw that the attacking elements had become pinned down on the slope by heavy enemy fire from three well-fortified and strategically placed enemy positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Master Sergeant Keeble dashed forward and joined the pinned-down platoon. Then, hugging the ground, Master Sergeant Keeble crawled forward alone until he was in close proximity to one of the hostile machine-gun emplacements. Ignoring the heavy fire that the crew trained on him, Master Sergeant Keeble activated a grenade and threw it with great accuracy, successfully destroying the position. Continuing his one-man assault, he moved to the second enemy position and destroyed it with another grenade. Despite the fact that the enemy troops were now directing their firepower against him and unleashing a shower of grenades in a frantic attempt to stop his advance, he moved forward against the third hostile emplacement, and skillfully neutralized the remaining enemy position. As his comrades moved forward to join him, Master Sergeant Keeble continued to direct accurate fire against nearby trenches, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Inspired by his courage, Company G successfully moved forward and seized its important objective. The extraordinary courage, selfless service, and devotion to duty displayed that day by Master Sergeant Keeble was an inspiration to all around him and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
